Randy Couture Workout

The Randy Couture workout, just like Randy himself, is legendary. He’ll be fighting in the Octagon this Saturday against Lyoto Machida, quite possibly his last fight ever.

But hey, the Natural is 47 years old! You try it!

Which just goes back to the Randy Couture workout. Randy has been the UFC heavyweight champion (as well as the light heavyweight champ) and was a small heavyweight.

He’s not the fastest or quickest guy in the cage.

He’s not the best technical boxer.

He doesn’t have the best jiu jitsu.

What Randy Couture does do, as Al Davis likes to say, is just win, baby! The man has heart and desire to spare.

He also has the conditioning to drive through any obstacle and break the other fighter’s will.

While Randy was training for strength, power, conditioning, quickness, stability, flexibility and endurance, a by product of his workout was a lean, muscular physique with low body fat levels.

In other words, Randy got ripped.

While Randy has been training all his life and have used a big variety of training protocols and exercise plans to get him ready for his big time fights, what’s become known as the Randy Couture workout is variations of barbell complexes.

Barbell Complexes are a fantastic way to build your anaerobic base. You’ll boost your cardio conditioning, increase your metabolism and burn up a lot of calories.

Here’s a sample Barbell Complex:

  • Deadlift
  • Hang Clean and Push Press
  • Bent Over Row
  • Stiff Legged Deadlift
  • Alt. Javelin Pres
  • Back Squat
  • Reverse Lunge
  • Bicep Curls

Start with an empty bar. Guys, the standard Olympic bar should work fine for you. Hit 10 reps per exercise, quickly, through a full range of motion.

Rest 1 minute and then repeat for 3 to 6 ‘sets’.

Try adding 5 pounds to the bar every couple of workouts.

You can put together a lot of variations of the Randy Couture workout that you see here but you need to put some thought into it.

You can’t just throw a bunch of exercises back to back that use a barbell. I’ll talk more about this in a future article.

By the way, you might think it feels too easy at the beginning of the workout. Don’t worry, you won’t be thinking that way for long!

Awesome post! I just got a barbell and weight bench set, and I’m anxious to put it to work. Plus I’m a big UFC fan! Hopefully I’ll get some great results from this workout. I’d love to see more details on this!
